Spring 2009
May/Sunday/2009 11:41 AM
Wow...
it’s spring 2009 which means two winters have blown by
and nothing on my website here has substantially
changed or been updated. This is a bit of a bummer as a
lot really does go on in our f-class sport. i had a so
so 2008 and I’m just going to leave it at that and see
what happens in 2009. The ORA calendar is now
officially up and running on the Ontario Rifle
Association’s website. I managed to get out to my first
ORA practice which was held on Saturday, May 2 on the
Mons at Camp Borden. Of course there were a lot of
shooters there that I already knew and there were also
quite a number of new shooters who came out to this
practice. Spring startups

Macs again!

I
thought I'd get started on revamping my fclass.ca
web-site. Being new to Macs I have no idea what folks
are using for web design programs. i vaguely know about
something called Dream-Weaver. After seeing the price
of this software they sure got the first part of its
name right! I spent 5 hours trying to figure out a way
of placing or converting Excel spreadsheets for use on
the site. I think this is the first major glitch I've
run into with working on a Mac and it's a lulu at that.
In the PC world I was using something called netFusion to create my website. If you're trying to compile quite a number of things together websites can get complicate real fast and unless you've got something to help keep them in some kind of organized fashion you actually loose stuff! With netFusion I'd open an Excel sheet of scores, block off the cells I wanted and cut and paste that directly on a page and bingo what you see is what you get. Simple works and the spread sheet data tells most of the story.
In MacWorld you can't do this as I've subsequently found out. Man was I in for a surprise the first time I cut and pasted one of the old Excel match result sheets onto a page. The grid got lost and the numbers didn't line up with the columns and the neat colours I used to delineate the columns to help you see things better in the lists, I mean with anywhere from 50 to 300+ shooters participating in our events looking at the results can be challenging. How long has Excel been out? The html code is a nightmare. You'd think someone up the food chain at Micro$oft would stumble on this and fix it. Too busy driving their red Ferraris I suppose.
I'm on some kind of fact finding mission and it's not looking pretty as I can't find an easy solution let alone an elegant one. What people don't have a use for seeing data in spread sheets on webpages? I did come across some interesting concepts on how you could put a spread sheet or other stuff up on the www and collaborate all at the same time without e-mailing copies to everyone nuts enough to be involved whatever kind of project it was. With some 50+ spreadsheets to change over I don't fancy working in an html editor for this coming winter. Drag and drop seems like an antithemea in this area.

Macs

So the big question is are we going to see any fancy updates to my long range website at www.fclass.ca? Yes in deedee! The catch like everything else is finding the time to diddle the overhaul. Seeing as winter is almost upon us I just might have some time then to get at it. It's going to be a major overhaul. I've got close to 100 pages on that site. Created it using netFusion. Fusion just about sums it up too. Why the Update? Well seems everyone's into blogging these days. Maintaining websites is a real pita. Ever look at the revise dates on some sites? Ask Mike Hockings how hard it is to stay on top of these things. Mike maintains our ORA website and he does a fantastic job. But I have to ask ya Mike I bet you could perk up your scores by a few points if you started doing it on a Mac.
PC have their place they're right up there with those store bought x-rigs I see on the 1000 yard line on the range. Savages excluded to pacify Jim Bullock and because I saw what some shooters did with them at the Spirit of American matches this year. Well actually I didn't see it I read about it on the Eagle website. Man that Widdington Center is something else. So are the winds there! Macs on the other hand are like custom 1/2 MOA rigs that you can win with or NightForce scopes! I love those scopes. Maybe Nick the Beard will drop one down the chimney this years. It's about the only way I could afford one! Enough said.
